Attention California Gun Owners: Make Your Voice Heard and Help Fight the Assault on Ammunition Sales!

Posted in: Uncategorized — Desert Wrangler @ 11:32 am

Anti-gun hysteria has reached a fever pitch in the Golden State. The California Assembly is considering a bill (Assembly Bill 2062) this session that, if passed, will have dire consequences for California’s law-abiding gun owners.

AB2062 is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, May 7 in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Sponsored by State Assembly Member Kevin De Leon (D-45), AB2062 would require that law-abiding gun owners obtain a permit to buy handgun ammunition and would impose severe restrictions on the private transfers of handgun ammunition. Applicants for a “permit-to-purchase” would be required to submit to a background check, pay a $35 fee, and wait as long as 30 days to receive the permit.

Under AB2062, it would be unlawful to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a “handgun ammunition vendor” in the Department of Justice’s database. Ammunition retailers would have to be licensed and store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers. The bill would also require vendors to keep a record of the transaction including the ammunition buyer’s name, driver’s license, the quantity, caliber, type of ammunition purchased, and right thumbprint, which would be submitted to the Department of Justice. Vendors would be required to contact the purchase permit database to verify the validity of a permit before completing a sale. All ammunition sales in the State of California would be subject to a $3 per transaction tax. Lastly, mail order ammunition sales would be prohibited. Any violator of AB2062 would be subject to civil fines.

Here’s what you can do to help protect our Second Amendment freedoms:

Participate in NRA’s Virtual “Lobby-Day” on Tuesday, May 6 and tell the Assembly to stop supporting ill-conceived anti-gun proposals like AB2062.

On Tuesday, May 6, call, fax, and email the Assembly between 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM and voice your opposition to more gun control proposals. Respectfully, tell your Assembly Member to oppose any assault on our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. To identify your Assembly Member and to get contact information, please click here. A roster of the entire Assembly can be found here.

Firearms owners able to travel to the State Capitol will be visiting the legislative offices at the same time your calls, faxes, and emails will be arriving. Please be polite while you address your concerns! The combination of your calls, faxes, and emails, together with those personal visits, will show legislators that California’s firearms owners strongly oppose AB2062 and similar anti-freedom proposals.

Forward this message to every gun owner you know and include all gun clubs, stores, ranges and Second Amendment groups. Please cross-post this on the internet on websites and firearm-related forums.
TOGETHER, OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD!

TOGETHER, WE CAN STOP THE ANTI-FREEDOM FORCES AND
PROTECT OUR RIGHTS!

Cowboy Action Shooting - New Shooters

Posted in: Shooting - Fun Stuff, Background - Intro — Desert Wrangler @ 1:12 pm

In late November we took on our first adventure of Cowboy Action Shooting since joining the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). My son and I showed up at one of The Cowboys monthly events and joined in on one of their “New Shooter Clinics”.

It was a somewhat unusual experience for the first time participating with the group. You hear many different stories about people’s experiences of what happens when you just show up to an event. Much to my surprise we weren’t alone, there were about 10 - 12 of us all together, men, women and junior shooters and the overall experience was outstanding.

The couple of guys that took on the group of new shooters, were very impressive. Not necessarily just due to their knowledge of the Cowboy Action Shooting / Single Action Shooting Scenarios but mostly due to their willingness to assist the new guy and get others involved in the sport and group.

None of us new guys brought guns or ammo just eye and ear protection. There were plenty of guns and ammo to use and try out. They either brought their own shotguns, rifles, and sixguns or others had loaned to them for use for the new shooter’s clinic. This gave all of us the opportunity to try out different styles and brands, from the Colt, Ruger Vaquero, The 1892 Winchester and other styles, and the shotguns - there were at least three styles to try out - the 1897 style pump action, the Stoeger double barrel hammerless as well the double barrel with exposed hammers.

We spent about 3- 4 hours learning about the scenarios of the handgun, rifle and shotguns. We all reviewed and participated in the safety techniques. We had the opportunity to go through a shooting scenrio un-timed and then timed. It sure makes a difference to your shooting ability as soon as you hear the timer beep - knowing the time is being recorded. Even being a new guy, you still don’t want to be the slowest and fumbles are sure to happen!

At the end of the session, it was clear that these guys just enjoyed the sport and wanted to be able to show others how to enjoy it as well. Hats off to the guys who helped us out and spent their day working with us rather than taking part in the day’s event!

If you have the opportunity to join into a new shooter’s clinic of some type, I’d highly recommend it, especially if you run into another group as assistive as the one we did.

I appologize for not remembering the names (aliases) of those who spent their days with us, but as I run across them in the future, I will update this article to include their names

Winchester Model 1892 Rossi Rifle Modifications

Posted in: Gunsmithing - Mods — Desert Wrangler @ 3:42 pm

In order to get started in the single action shooting / cowboy action shooting scenarios, we needed to obtain rifles. Due to outfitting two separate shooters budget concerns were a priority. We also were eager to get started so waiting for additional money to get into the “Extra Cash Category” looked kinda grim, seeing Christmas was only a couple months away, we selected the
EMF Company Hartford / Rossi 1892 Winchester Carbine Rifles.

Before I bought them I started looking around for a gunsmith that was local to be able to do the action work.

I’m not a fan of shipping my guns all over the country for someone to do work on them. No luck there, but I did hear about Steve Young aka Nate Kiowa Jones the 92 Rossi Specialist. I checked out his website, and saw that he had a couple of scenarios that interested me;
1) Buy the guns already worked on from him. and
2) Get his video and do the action work my self.

I called and spoke to him about the option 1, buy the already reworked rifles from him, but being impatient the time-frame he currently had on turn around didn’t fit with what I wanted to achieve.

I ordered two of the EMF Company Hartford / Rossi 1892 Winchester Carbine Rifles and had them shipped to a local gun shop to deal with the transfer.

After getting a-hold of the two rifles I did instantly noticed the roughness in the action but it seems like they are going to do us a fine job after some work.

So I ordered the video, also the items that his video suggests replacing (Ejector Spring & the Magazine
Follower). These two items don’t come with the video so make sure you call and ask for them. Otherwise you will get part way through the video and rework project and have to make a choice stop get the parts or be ripping it down again soon.

Shortly after ordering it, the video and parts came. I was happy with the turn around with the delivery, only a few days. A day or so went by and I had a while that I was able to just sit to watch the video, as a dry run to see if I was going to bite off more than I could chew. I noticed that there were several parts that were going to be modified / smoothed out and cleaned up and I was going to need a dremel or a grinder of some sort to get this job done. I Didn’t have either in my tool supply. I chose the dremel, due to cost and the ability to get additional fittings or polishing, sanding and grinding attachments making it a more viable tool for now and in the future.

I didn’t necessarily take off running into the modifications due to I wanted to see about something else folks had warned me about, “It Likes 357 not the 38 rounds so well” and I wanted to see for myself if it was true. So I cleaned it up and prepped it for a run through with 125 grain 38 ammunition at the range. It operated sluggishly as the action was tight, and the ammunition only got hung up a few times out of about 150 rounds. I’m still out on the ammunition decision just yet - let’s see what happens after the action work.
